Hello, everyone! Welcome back to MaoMi Chinese. Last time, we talked about New Year’s resolutions. This year, does your list of resolutions include “living a healthy life”? Today, we’ll discuss healthy living habits in Chinese.

What time do you usually go to bed? What time do you wake up? In Chinese, there’s a saying: “zǎoshuìzǎoqǐ早睡早起shēntǐ身体hǎo好” (Going to bed early and waking up early is good for your health). This means that if you go to bed early and get up early every day, your body will be healthier.

Sometimes, we like to use our phones or watch things on our computers before going to bed, and then we forget the time. But the next morning, we still have to get up early for work. Staying up late and waking up early is bad for your health, while going to bed early and waking up early is good for your health.

Now that we’ve talked about sleep, let’s discuss eating. What do you do after a meal? Do you play on your phone, watch TV, or go to sleep? In Chinese, there’s a saying: “fàn饭hòu后zǒu走yī一zǒu走,huó活dào到jiǔ九shíjiǔ十九” (Take a walk after a meal, and you’ll live to ninety-nine). This is an interesting phrase. It means that taking a walk after eating is great for your health and could help you live longer—perhaps even to ninety-nine years old! After a meal, you can invite your family to go for a walk in the park. You could say to them: “Take a walk after a meal, and you’ll live to ninety-nine!”

When people get sick, many of them take medicine. However, there are some Chinese people who don’t like taking medicine. If you ask them why, they might say: “shìyàosānfēndú是药三分毒” (All medicines are partly poisonous). This means that while medicine can cure illnesses, it may also have side effects. Side effects are the negative impacts that medicine can have on our body. For example, after taking cold medicine, you might feel drowsy and want to sleep. That’s a side effect of cold medicine. Many Chinese people believe that “all medicines are partly poisonous”, so the best approach is to develop healthy habits and avoid getting sick in the first place.

Chinese people have other healthy habits, too, such as drinking warm water, practising tai chi, and eating light food. Drinking warm water is popular because many Chinese people believe it keeps the body warm, and a warm body is healthier. Tai chi is a slow form of exercise that many Chinese people enjoy. It’s a bit like meditation and helps the body relax. Eating light food means eating less fried food, and avoiding overly sweet or salty dishes, as these aren’t good for your health.

Let’s quickly review the key expressions we’ve learned today:

“zǎoshuìzǎoqǐ早睡早起shēntǐ身体hǎo好” – Going to bed early and waking up early makes your body healthier.  “fàn饭hòu后zǒu走yī一zǒu走,huó活dào到jiǔ九shíjiǔ十九” – Taking a walk after a meal is great for your health and can help you live longer.   “shìyàosānfēndú是药三分毒” – Medicine can cure illnesses but might have side effects. The best way to stay healthy is to build good habits and avoid getting sick.

What healthy habits do you have? Feel free to leave a comment and share them with us!
