3、portconsumer healthandfitness.Key words:Trends,FitnessIndustry,Wellness,Survey,CommercialINTRODUCTIONACSMs Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends is a valuable tool for exerciseprofessionals.As programming and service demands evolve,the fitnessindustrys response must match consumers needs.The 2020 surve
4、y pre-dicted wearable technology,high-intensity interval training,and grouptraining as potential trends ahead of the global pandemic(1).But in2021 and 2022,we saw online training,home exercise gyms,and outdoor activities grabthe spotlight as local mandates governed nonessential gatherings of large g
5、roups(2,3).Asepidemiological studies documenting factors leading to the high morbidity and mortalityof COVID-19 patients emerged,global consumer surveys revealed an increasing priorityonhealthandwellness.Inthe2023survey,fitnessprogramsforolderadults(#4)andfunc-tional fitness training(#5)moved into t
6、he top 10(4).Strength training moved up to#2(previously#4 in 2022).Notably,specific trends added in response to quarantine man-dates,such as online live exercise classes,fell out of the top 10 trends list in 2023.Newto the 2024 survey were potential trends that acknowledge the bold return to in-pers
7、onfitness,such as boutique fitness studios and subscription-based memberships.The results of this annual survey guide fitness industry decision-makers.Data are gath-ered from thousands of researchers and practitioners to determine health and fitnesstrends for the following year.The first survey was
8、conducted in 2006 by Walter R.Thompson,Ph.D.,FACSM,and determined predictions for 2007(5).For the past18years,the ACSMtrendshavebeenusedtosupportthe investmentinpersonnel,equip-ment,and facilities(see supplemental data,Appendix 1,http:/ these trends to investigate their own industry directions(6,7).
9、Previously,these trendshave been collected and reported separately(810)(see sidebar).This survey aims to gather data to predict potential trends that will guide the fitnessindustry.The survey is designed for clinicians,researchers,and practitioners to pro-vide input on trends as opposed to“fads”that
10、 will have little traction or benefit toSidebar:New for this Year?ACSMsWorldwideSurveyofFitnessTrendsiscombinedwiththefitnesstrendsfromaround the globe for a holistic snapshot of the direction of the fitness industry for2024.?We compare the results from the ACSM survey to data collected in other reg
11、ions ofthe world to understand the magnitude of these trends.?Eight trend categories were created to organize individual fitness trends and offer athematic presentation of fitness trends that may be related.?Readers will enjoy a more comprehensive discussion to inform business decisions.14ACSMs Heal

13、dustry.As such,it is essential to agree on the definitionof a trend versus a fad as described to survey respondents:Trend a general development or change in a situationor in the way that people are behaving(http:/dictionary.cambridge.org).Fadafashionthatistakenupwithgreatenthusiasmfora brief period;
14、a craze(http:/).THE SURVEYThis years trends survey honored the history of the originalworldwide trends survey while offering enhanced validity and re-liability.Industry experts reviewed trends from the 2023 surveyfor inclusion,and potentially emerging trends were identifiedthrough a literature revie
15、w and a pilot study.The pilot study(n=16)comprisedrepresentativesfromcommercial,community,medical,and academic organizations.Participants in the pilotstudy were primarily men(56%),with a mean age of 49 years,living/working in North America,South America,and Europe.For the 2024 survey,there were 45 p
16、ossible trends across eightcategories(see Figure 1).Trend categories were designed to createa context for survey participants to understand the individual trenditems better.In addition,a brief description of each trend was pro-videdtoimproveinterpretation.TheonlinesurveywasdisseminatedviaQualtricsXM
17、andwascompletedonaveragein18minutes.Sim-ilar to previous years,an incentive to participate was made availableto 10 randomly selected winners.Turn to page 30 to see this yearsprizewinners.Incentivesincludedfitness-relatedbooksandstudyma-terials published byWolters KluwerHealth/LippincottWilliams andW
18、ilkins and Human Kinetics and a$100 Mastercardgift card.Trend items were measured using a 10-point Likert-type scaleranging from 1(not a trend)to 10(definitely a trend).Participantsalso were provided a comment box to add qualitative data aboutthe eight trend categories or potential items omitted fro
19、m the cur-rentsurveyforfutureconsideration.TheonlinesurveywasemailedtoACSMcertifiedprofessionals,ACSMalliancemembers,ACSMprofessional members,HFJ associate editors,and HFJ editorialboard members(N=24,566).A link also was provided on theHFJ web site and social media platforms,including this JournalsF
20、acebookpageandtheACSMInstagram.Afterduplicatesandin-complete datalineswere removed,afinalsample sizeof 1,997wasused to determine the 2024 ACSM Top 20 Trends.Survey respondents represent a variety of occupations withinthefitnessindustry(Table1),with22%indicatingtheywereem-ployed as full-time or part-
21、time personal trainers.Participantswere 51%men with a mean age of 39.2 years.Approximatelyhalf of the participants have 1 to 6 years of experience workingin the fitness industry,which indicates a slightly less experienceddemographicthanpreviousyears.Table2alsoshowstheeduca-tion level and primary wor
22、k setting for respondents.ACSM SURVEY RESULTSThis reportfor2024describes the top 20potential trends definedin ACSMs Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends(Table 3).As inprevious years,the order of trends is dynamic and reflects thechanging needs of the fitness industry,although others may seemto be rela
23、tively static for a duration of time.Wearable technologyhasbeenthe#1trendeachyearsince2016(withtheexceptionof#3 for 2018 and#2 for 2021).Worksite health promotion hadbeen ousted from the top 20 for many years(#27 for 2021,#28 for 2022,#30 for 2023)but comes in at#2 for 2024.Threeof the four digital
24、technology trends emerge in the top 20,whichmay indicate a continued focus on connectivity and feedback forimprovedfitnessbehaviorsandoutcomes.Employingcertifiedfit-ness professionals,the#6 trend,moves toward the top of thetrends list(#9 for 2023,#13 for 2022).1.Wearable Technology.Wearable technolo
25、gy is the#1 trend and has been a mainstay in the top 3 trendssince2016.Wearabletechnologyincludesavarietyofde-vices that a person can wear or attach to themselves andare commonly connected to a smartphone.This technol-ogyprovidesreal-timeinformationsuchasheartrate,stepcounts,activeminutes,andsleepti
26、me.Wearabletechnol-ogy allows exercise professionals to further individualizeday-to-day physical activity for their clients,tracking pat-terns,performance,and progress over time(11).2.Worksite Health Promotion.Worksite health pro-motion is new to the trends list at#2.This seems to fur-ther support a
27、n increased interest in health and qualityof life,which impacts many areas,including workplaceproductivity.According to the Centers for Disease Con-trol and Prevention,the average American will spendapproximately one-third of their life at the workplacewhen participating in a 40-hour work week.Em-pl
28、oyers have an opportunity to encourage health-promoting behaviors(e.g.,physical activity and preven-tative screenings).These benefits often lower insurancecosts,increase workplace productivity,and improvemental health(12).Some examples of worksite healthpromotion include access to fitness facilities

31、ependently(13).The older adult population ofAmericans is projected to continue its growth through2040.Aging increases the risk of chronic illness,cogni-tive impairment,and falls in this population.Regularaerobic and muscle-strengthening physical activity isan essential strategy for reducing the impa
32、ct of disease,maintaining independence,and improving quality oflife throughout the aging process.4.Exercise for Weight Loss.Exercise for weightloss comes inat#4(#8for2023).Itisbeing recognizedthat regular exercise is a contributor to improving met-abolic function and reducing body fat.Exercise shoul

36、s exist that makelicensurelessrealisticforthefitnessindustryinmanyre-gions worldwide.However,reimbursement for the ser-vices that QEPs are trained to provide supports recog-nition of exercise professionals(i.e.,personal trainersand exercise physiologists)as a part of the health-carecontinuum.An ACSM
37、 Task Force was formed in2021 to advocate for policy change allowing insurancebilling for patient services performed by QEPs withintheir scope of practice to improve physical activity out-comes and quality of life(14).6.EmployingCertifiedExerciseProfessionals.Em-ploying certified professionals,appea
38、ring at#6 for2024,has been a consistent top 10 trend.Health andfitness companies recognize the importance of hiringtrainedprofessionalstoleadfitnessprograms.Obtainingan accredited certification communicates to consumersthat a professional has obtained proficient knowledgeto support them with theirfi
39、tness goals.Certified profes-sionals can be trusted to have the minimum skill level tosafely prescribe exercise within their scope of practice.Maintaining accredited certifications requires evidenceof continued education,which is important for decreas-ing injury risk for consumers and reducing liabi

41、10 trends list at#7.It is a part of the digitaltechnology trend category.This trend first appeared inthetop20atnumber17in2016,underthenameSmartphone exercise apps.The use of mobile exercise apps al-lowsforflexibilityinprogramdelivery.Exerciseappshaveimpacted the market with many unique options for c
42、on-sumers and demonstrate effectiveness in increasing physi-cal activity for users.Consumers can use mobile apps totrack exercise activities and receive feedback on perfor-mance.Some apps integrate mechanisms for social sup-port and provide tips for behavioralskillacquisition,bothkey components of h
43、ealth behavior change theory.8.Exercise for Mental Health.Programming exercisefor improved mental health lands at#8 as individualsbegin to acknowledge the importance of movement oncognition and mood.Mental health includes emotional,psychological,and social well-being.Approximately onein every eight
44、individuals globally is affected to varyingdegrees by mental illness(WHO),and regular exercisecanserveasaprotectivefactor.Physicalactivityandexer-cise can boost mood and improve mental health(15).ACSMoffersresourcestoexerciseprofessionalsforincor-porating physical activity to support mental health.9

50、ving fitness testing,goal set-ting,and program implementation.Consumers maybenefitfromthisservice tolearn effectiveexerciseselec-tion,safety,and recovery methods.Earning a nation-ally accredited credential such as those certificationsoffered by ACSM can prepare exercise professionalsto work with a v
51、ariety of clients.11.Lifestyle Medicine.With increased consumer andindustry focus on both longevity and health span(highquality of life years),it is no surprise that lifestyle med-icine has moved up five spots this year to#11.Lifestylemedicine first appeared at#16 in 2020(#18 for 2021,#19 for 2022,#
52、16 for 2023).Lifestyle medicine pro-motes healthy behaviors as the foundation of healthpromotion,disease prevention,and medical treatment.Increasing physical activity and decreasing sedentarybehavior are general recommendations for improvinghealthoutcomesforallpeoplewithchronicdisease.Ex-amples of t
53、argeted patient behaviors align with theAmerican Heart Associations(AHA)Lifes Essential8,and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine rec-ommends additionalpriorities such as improving nutri-tion,reducing stress,and enhancing social well-being.12.OutdoorFitnessActivities.Outdoorfitnessactivitiesla
54、nds at#12 for 2024.While this trend debuted as#25in2010,outdoorfitnessactivitiesjumpedtohigherrank-ing spots in the last several years(#4 for 2021,#3 for2022,and#6 for 2023)due to COVID-19related re-strictions.Even as the industry finds a“new normal,”participation in fitness activities outdoors seem

74、ican Council on Exercise to promotephysical activity in health-care policy.17.Traditional Strength Training.This trend is afundamental component of ACSMs exercise guide-lines but has declined considerably since 2020,comingin at#17 for the 2024 survey(#4 for 2022 and#2 for2023).Focusing on proper mov
75、ement and lifting tech-nique,traditional strength training incorporates bar-bells,dumbbells,andkettlebellstoimproveormaintainmuscular fitness by manipulating repetitions,sets,tempo,load,and exercise selection to reach differentmuscular fitness goals.Given the well-documentedmental and physical benef
76、its of strength training,bou-tique studios and big box gyms continue to innovateand promote strength training-based group exerciseclass formats,with MindBody Online categorizingstrength training as an industry-wide top trend.18.Data-DrivenTrainingTechnology.Thistrendwasadded as a new potential trend
77、 for 2024.It appears asthe#18 trend and demonstrates the significance of dig-ital technology within the fitness industry.Clients canuse real-time data output,such as heart rate,velocity,and speed,to guide their workout experiences.Thistype of training allows for individualized coachingand instructio

81、returned to the list at#19for2024.Online personaltraining uses digitaltech-nology to deliver online individual and group instruc-tional exercise programs.It may include interactive,livetraining sessions or asynchronous/prerecorded workouttemplateprogramsfromacertifiedexerciseprofessional.This trend
82、equips certified professionals with a moreefficient and convenient way to reach more con-sumers with their training programs and expertise.In addition,online personal training may improve accessi-bility of services to those experiencing barriers to meetingphysicalactivityguidelines,suchasperceivedla
83、ckofknowl-edge,time,access to facilities,and social support(17).20.High-Intensity Interval Training(HIIT).Droppingto#20 for 2024(#7 for 2023),HIIT involves repeatedbouts of short,near-maximum effort exercise(80%maximum heart rate),followed by longer active or pas-siverecoveryperiods.Recognizedforits
