Medicine, Humanity and Media—“Healthy China” and Health Communication International Conference held

Peking University, November 12, 2019: from November 9 to 10, Medicine, Humanity and Media – “Healthy China” and Health Communication International Conference was held at School of Journalism and Communication, Peking University.

This conference is an international academic seminar hosted by Peking University and co-organized by The George Institute for Global Health, China. Approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the conference invited 11 well-known experts and scholars from the United States, Canada, Singapore, South Korea, Australia and other countries, and also attracted more than 100 people from universities, hospitals, centers for disease control and other medical institutions to participate.

The conference includes keynote speeches, sub-session speeches, scholarly publishing workshops, roundtable discussions on curriculum, and other various parts. Participants conducted full and enthusiastic exchanges and discussions on many issues concerning the current development of health communication in China.

 

Opening ceremony


At the opening ceremony, Professor Yu Hong, deputy dean of School of Journalism and Communication, Peking University, introduced the history of the master program of health communication in PKU. After the opening ceremony, Professor Gary L. Kreps from George Mason University delivered a keynote speech. He has published the first health communication textbook and is known as the “father of health communication”. In his keynote speech on “The Direction of Health Communication”, he comprehensively introduced the basic categories, core themes, key theoretical models, basic methods and development directions of American health communication research. Several famous professors also delivered their insightful speeches after the opening ceremony.

On the afternoon of November 10, 8 sub-sessions themed “Health Communication in Community and Society”, “Interpersonal Health Communication”, and many other topics related to health communication were held. 40 scholars and participants from Peking University, Zhejiang University, Xiamen University, Sun Yat-sen University, City University of Hong Kong, and other universities delivered speeches and conducted in-depth discussions.

At the end of the meeting, Yu Hong delivered a short concluding speech. The schedule of the two-day conference was intense and busy, and the scholars not only shared new insights, but also developed a clearer direction for the future development of health communication.
