讲座题目：Second Chance, Second Child? Renegotiation over Childbearing, Divorce, and Resource Allocation

主讲嘉宾：杨涵墨

中国人民大学人口与健康学院讲师，北京大学经济学博士，曾于哈佛大学、斯坦福大学从事博士后研究。研究领域为人口与劳动经济学、健康经济学，重点关注生育、老龄和医疗卫生体制等问题。研究主要采用政策导向的实证分析方法，探讨各类政策干预对个体行为及健康、人口和社会经济结果的广泛影响。成果发表于《人口研究》、Lancet Public Health、JAMA Health Forum等期刊。

内容摘要

This paper exploits the relaxation of China’s One-Child Policy as a quasi-experimental shock to examine how revealed disparities in spousal fertility preferences affect childbearing and divorce decisions. The policy relaxation gave couples with one child a second chance to fulfill fertility intentions, activating latent gendered fertility preferences that had been institutionally neutralized: husbands prefer more children when the firstborn is a daughter, while wives’ preferences show no variation by firstborn gender. Using data from the China Family Panel Studies (2010-2020), we find that relative to couples with firstborn sons, those with firstborn daughters experience both a higher probability of second births and, among couples who do not have a second child, a higher probability of divorce. We propose a collective household model with a remarriage outside option, in which the fertility policy change asymmetrically increases the values of husbands’ outside options, potentially triggering intrahousehold renegotiation. Further evidence on renegotiation over resource allocation, as well as on husbands’ post-divorce remarriage and fertility patterns, supports the model’s predictions.
