Healthy ageing means staying active, independent and connected as we grow older. It’s about making choices and accessing support that help us maintain good health, mobility and wellbeing throughout life.

The population in Western NSW is ageing. Between 2021 and 2041, the number of people aged over 70 years in our district will rise by 44%.

People in our region are also more likely to experience preventable health conditions. Taking steps now to age well is important to reduce these risks and support quality of life as we get older.

Taking steps early is important to assist in ageing well. Evidence shows that the ageing process starts as early as 30 years of age!

Ageing well is a priority for all our communities.

Some simple but powerful ways to support healthy ageing include:

Learning about ageing well – access education and resources including eating wellPreventing falls – stay safe and independentKeep strength and mobility – build or maintain muscle and balanceStaying social – remain connected with family, friends and community

Regular exercise plays a vital role in helping people age well. Keeping active supports mobility, strength and balance, which can lower the risk of falls and injuries. It also has important benefits for overall health and wellbeing, from managing chronic conditions to improving mood and energy levels.

Being active isn’t just about physical health, it is also a great way to stay socially connected.

There are many ways you can help support healthy ageing in your community. Whether it is by volunteering to become a Physical Activity Leader or by sharing your own experience of our ageing-well programs, your contribution makes a real difference.
