Bilingual Dictionary of Health Related Terms (English-Spanish, Spanish-English)

4th Edition now Available in PDF Format!

DESCRIPTION

This Bilingual Dictionary of Health Related Terms (English-Spanish and Spanish-English) was developed as an instrument for health care personnel and other professionals working with the Latino population in the United States. The main purpose of the dictionary is to strengthen communication between Spanish-speaking populations and the health workers serving them, and facilitate dialogue by reducing cultural and linguistic barriers.

Besides the proper terms in English and Spanish, this dictionary contains many popular expressions used in Mexico and Central America to describe names, signs and symptoms of illness. This fourth edition includes new terms on several health topics, including infectious diseases, chronic diseases, environmental health, and managed health care.

This publication is a joint effort of the Health Initiative of the Americas, a program of the School of Public Health at the University of California Berkeley, and the Office of Binational Border Health, of the California Department of Public Health. The compilation of materials, editing, and review of this edition and past editions of the dictionary could not have been accomplished without the collaboration of countless people working in the following organizations:

California Department of Public Health
California Department of Health Care Services
County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency
Illinois Department of Human Services
Imperial County, Public Health Department
Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS)

Publication of this edition was made possible by the generous support of the California Office of Binational Border Health, the California Department of Public Health and Department of Health Care Services, Office of Multicultural Health, the Border Infectious Diseases Surveillance (BIDS) program, and Health Net of California.
