【推荐1】wonder of the natural world
When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east—the sky was becoming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There was nothing to see, but I knew it was there.
After about a mile, a stranger appeared beside the path. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied. “you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it.
Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose behind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and down to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of the natural world –the Grand Canyon.
I looked down to the Colorado River, a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fifteen miles away, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more than 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge!
I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder of the natural world?” I certainly know the answer. What do you think?

I have learned that little kids are dogs, while teenagers are cats. It’s easy to be a dog owner. You feed it and train it, and it will put its head on your knee gently. Whenever you call it, it will run to you with great warmth.
Then around age 13, your lovely little puppy turns into a big old cat. When you ask it to come inside, it looks surprised, wondering why you give such an order. It may turn its nose up at the meal you’re offering.
When you reach out to touch its head, it will stay away from you, as if trying to hide its own secrets.
The kid now is not a dog any more. It thinks something in a totally different way. It seems so strange. Maybe it even doesn’t want to go out with its family members.
You may think that you’ve done something wrong, because you are the one who raises (抚养) it and stays with it all the time. Filled with guilt (内疚) and fear, you make an effort (努力) to make your pet under your control (控制), but the result always turns out (结果是) to be disappointing.
Instead of being like a dog owner, you should learn to act like a cat owner. Put a dish of food near the door, and let it come to you. But remember that a cat also needs your heal (治愈) and your love. You need to tell it there is a door which is always open for it.

It’s possible for human to land on Mars. We have already sent several spaceships to Mars. Some of them have landed on Mars. However, none of them had humans. Astronauts have walked on the moon, but so far, nobody has ever set foot on Mars.
Many scientists believe that someday we will send astronauts to Mars. This is not an easy thing to do. The biggest challenge (挑战) is the cost. Another challenge is health problems that astronauts might have. Staying too long in a place could cause other health problems—it could even make a person go blind or cause other serious health problems.
Although there are so many challenges, some scientists and people still think that we should send astronauts to Mars. The governments of the United States, Russia, Germany, China and other countries are all interested in visiting Mars. There are also private companies that are interested in doing it.
▲ With the technology that we have today, it would take six or seven months. However, we might soon have technology that would let us make the trip in only two weeks. In 1969, the United States sent astronauts to the moon. Those astronauts have already returned to Earth. Some people think that if the first astronauts have the chance to reach Mars, they should build a colony (聚居地) and live on it for the rest of their lives. That way, it will be easier for more astronauts to reach Mars later. Buzz Aldrin, the second person who walked on the moon, is one of the people who agrees with this idea. He once said, “Forget the moon. Let’s go to Mars!”
